Solid Sterling Silver.
These studs were hand-carved in wax, using the textured point of a piece of a lightening whelk shell, or sea snail, found on the Central Coast of California.
The lightening whelk has been used as a metaphor of fire/sun and purification/continuity in ancient cultures because of it's intricate internal spiral shape.
